Position Description:
Soltage is seeking an experienced Civil/Structural Project Engineer to own civil, structural, and site civil engineering for our standalone battery energy storage (BESS) and solar-plus-storage projects, from design review through construction and commissioning. Reporting directly to the SVP of Engineering, you’ll help expand Soltage’s storage footprint in Mid-Atlantic and Northeast urban centers and other U.S. markets.
Job Responsibilities:
- Support civil and structural design for utility-scale BESS, solar PV, substation, and balance-of-plant (BOP) infrastructure across North America.
- Lead technical review of civil and structural deliverables, including grading, drainage, stormwater, foundations, equipment support structures, retaining systems, access roads, underground utilities, cable trenches, and erosion and sediment control.
- Conduct site visits for field investigations, constructability reviews, geotechnical observations, and foundation and civil infrastructure inspections.
- Develop and review engineering calculations, specifications, construction drawings, and submittals for compliance with project requirements and design standards.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for civil and structural matters from detailed engineering through closeout and oversee external engineering consultants.
- Review vendor foundation and wall designs, equipment loads, seismic criteria, and installation requirements for BESS containers, inverters, transformers, switchgear, and substation equipment.
- Support RFPs, EPC bid evaluations, engineering estimates, and value engineering.
- Resolve RFIs, NCRs, field design changes, and construction issues with contractors to minimize schedule and cost impacts.
- Verify completion of civil and structural work during commissioning and support mechanical completion and turnover.
Experience and Education Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering required (Civil Engineering preferred).
- Strong communication and consultant-management skills; comfortable working with all levels, from field teams to executives and board members.
- Highly organized and self-directed; able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of project or field engineering experience on urban civil construction projects supporting electrical generation or utility equipment.
- Strong knowledge of civil and structural engineering for utility-scale BESS, solar PV, substations, and high-voltage infrastructure, including applicable North American codes and standards.
- Working knowledge of structural steel, reinforced concrete, shallow and deep foundations, equipment anchorage, seismic and wind loading, retaining and fire/noise-rated walls, duct banks, and cable trenches.
- Working knowledge of site development (grading, drainage, stormwater, erosion control, access roads) and geotechnical principles (bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability, liquefaction).
- Experience coordinating with EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers, utilities, Owner’s Engineers, and regulatory agencies.
- Familiarity with construction QA/QC documentation, including RFIs, submittals, ITPs, NCRs, punch lists, and as-builts.
- Familiarity with construction sequencing, heavy equipment installation, crane planning, and contractor means and methods.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook).
Preferred qualifications:
- New York State Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
- Experience with construction management and scheduling software such as Procore or Primavera P6.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD / Civil 3D.
